Saalbach ski resort is the most popular resort in the very large and very popular Skicircus ski network. Saalbach resort is attractive and retains its Tyrolean charm despite being a lively and busy modern ski resort. It caters well to all ability of skiers and is both relaxing and lively. The surrounding valley is lined with trees giving a great mix of alpine and mountain skiing. Learn the area and use your piste maps to make the most of the 270km of pistes that are easily accessed from Saalback ski resort. Apres ski is good and like may Austrian resorts manages to be loud, and fun whilst maintaining a friendly village atmosphere. The ski area is popular with intermediates and the 'circuit/circus' can be easily navigated on mostly blues with an occasional red run thrown in. Experienced skiers here will enjoy the more challenging runs which come straight back down into Saalback from the top of the Schattberg Express cabin. The altidue ramge here is in the region of 1km with a peak of just under 2100m and so conditions at the bottom of the slopes can be a bit slushy at times, but as this is an extremely popular and busy resort there are plenty of snow-cannons to keep the snow fresh on these lower slopes. During the peak season, snow coverage and quality is usually very good. Much of the skiing here is below the tree line which helps protect the snow on the pistes however, this doesn't limit the massive area and multitude of off-piste routes that area available for intermediate and experienced skiers, so ultimately there is far more to ski here than just the official 270km of pistes shown on the ski map. The accomodation at Saalbach is varied and there are a range of hotels to suit most budgets, but Saalbach also has a bit of a reputation for good spa hotels offering pools and saunas to help recover from a hard days ski. Both on and off the slopes in turn Apres bars are all lively places to be in Saalbach. From 3pm to 6pm the bars are packed with apres revellers and many of the bars have DJ's and live bands which cater to the boot stomping apres crowds. Saalbach's closest airport is Salzburg, which is approximately 1.5 hours away.
