Ticino, Switzerland
Airolo ski resort is a small, but very accessible, ski resort located in the Ticino canton of Switzerland. A day trip to this ski resort is common amongst visitors, making the ski resort sometimes busy at peak periods. However, when the lifts are quiet, they make for a fast ascent up the mountain where some great off piste skiing can be found. The ‘Ravina’ lift is recommended to get to some of the best off piste skiing, although this should only be attempted by expert skiers. Despite most of the runs at higher altitudes being catered to the more confident skier, beginners those looking to learn in a day or two should take advantage of the highly recommended Swiss school of Ski and Snowboard Airolo. The Yuki Snowpark is also suited to all levels of skier.
In terms of the ski resort atmosphere, Airolo ski resort does compromise some of its charm for good accessibility (the town is located on a main road), although there is plenty to explore higher up the mountain where the scenery across the valley makes for impressive viewing. If you are looking to spend more than a day here, B&B Gottardo offers a friendly atmosphere coupled with attractive ‘wood’ style rooms which all come with a private bathroom and free breakfast. Lugano airport is only approximately 1 hour away when the weather is good, again highlighting the convenient nature of this resort.
