Mayrhofen is the most famous and popular resort within the Zillertal 3000 ski network. The resort is well established with great facilities both on and off the slopes.

Mayrhofen is a popular destination and the resort itself hosts numerous bars, some chic, some less so. What is certain, is that a good time is had by all. The resort is charming, friendly and successfully combines table stomping apres with some really, very good quality restaurants.

The resort itself hides its super-efficiency and ability to be able to handle the hoards, behind a heart-warming traditional Austrian architecture. The town, especially the central area is both rustic and charming.

Mayrhofen sits at an altitude of 630m and so is quite low, but skiers are whisked up from the valley into a vast skiable region via efficient lifts with minimal queues.

The bulk of the skiable pistes can be accessed directly via Mayrhofen via cable cars on both sides of the town, although experienced skiers can ski all the way down to the resort on a black run from the Ahorn, when conditions are good. There is also a regular bus service to Glacier skiing from Hintertux further up the valley, for those who want to venture further afield on the same lift pass.

Most of the pistes are between the altitude of 1650m and 2500m and so snow conditions tend to be good throughout the season. The sunnier pistes are maintained with snow cannons to always ensure a full season of good quality skiing is available.

This resort suits skiers of all abilities, but it is favoured by intermediates. Beginners and the experienced should not be put off, there are good slopes for everyone here, however, the bulk of the runs are red, and intermediates will get the best out of what this resort has to offer on the slopes. One piste of note is the Harakiri, its steep, very steep. Don’t be fooled by the more gentle start, the brough of the steep section is usually marked by a collection of skiers taking a few moments to reflect before they head off down the wall.

The size of Mayrhofen enables the resort to offer visitors as much off skis as on. The resort has toboggan runs, horse-riding, paragliding, sleigh rides and ice skating, so there is always plenty to do even when conditions are poor in the slopes.

Mayrhofen, is very easy to get to from Inssbruck airport as journey times are usually about an hour. Weekends can be busy, but this gem of a resort is definitely worth a visit.
