Banff Sunshine ski area is a large ski resort in Canada and is one of three popular ski resorts around the Banff national park area. The ski resort dates back as far as 1934 and now has over 120 runs with 1 high speed gondola and Canada's one and only heated chairlift. The resort is best suited to intermediates and advanced skiers, with some of the most scenic off piste skiing to be found here across the country. The popular Goat’s Eye Mountain (named after its large eye shaped hole in the rock near the summit) offer some great black and blue runs which mostly cut down through the trees providing a more sheltered alpine skiing experience. 'Scapegoat' is one of the easier runs that winds down more gently for those looking for a slightly easier trail down Goat's Eye mountain. Aside from the runs, this large ski area also offers snow parks and beginner areas, so there is something for everyone at this resort which has over 3300 acres of skiable terrain. Snow conditions are often very good here, and the resort boasts a 7-month long ski season running from November to May which is impressive compared to other Canadian ski resorts.
In terms of accessibility, it is a short 16km drive from the resort of Banff and well worth the trip by car or bus and then a 14-minute Gondola will take you to the base. There is a small amount of accommodation available at Sunshine but most visitors do stay in the far livelier resort of Banff. The resort of Banff is friendly and lively with a range of accommodation types to suit all budgets. The small town is a gateway to the Banff national park with it's access to hikes, ski areas and thermal springs. The town has good quality bars and restaurants, once again to suit all budgets as well as museums and activities for children.
