Avoriaz ski resort is a 1960's purpose built resort set at a high altitude in the Haute-Savoie region of France. The architecture can sometimes be a little brutal but improvements have been made over subsequent decades. Despite the architecture Avoriaz is a first class busy resort to visit where the streets double as pistes and the resort has been designed wherever possible for ski-to-door. Avoriaz is part of the massive portes du Soleil ski network and is ideally positioned to enable access to this vast ski range. One great benefit of heading to Avoriaz for a ski holiday is its proximity to Geneva airport. Less than a 2 hour drive connects the two places, meaning that a weekends skiing is more than viable.

In the heart of the huge Portes du Soleil ski area, Avoriaz ski resort offers a great balance of scenic skiing, high altitudes, great links to nearby ski areas and some lively nightlife. Despite being surrounded by steep and dramatic mountains and pistes, Avoriaz provides a great base for the beginner skier. For example the Écoles ski run on the south side of the town is a small tow rope for learners to gain confidence on a very easy surface. It is next to Dromonts tow rope, which is a similar area. From here, there is also a longer green run which heads down towards Morzine. The Proclou ski lift is an easy way to get back up to Avoriaz from here. Overall, Avoriaz is a great place to learn how to ski.

Intermediates can take advantage of the striking views and speedy pistes that come with the very dramatic set of mountains around Avoriaz. For example, taking the Chavanette ski lift provides some stunning views of Dents Blanches, and connects Avoriaz to Les Crosets indirectly. From the top of Chavanette, there is a wide selection of red and blue runs, all which offer an exhilarating ride back down to Avoriaz. Heading the opposite way out of Avoriaz, towards Mont Blanc, as another excellent option for intermediates to explore the stunning Portes du Soleil ski area.

Experts are spoilt for choice, as the Avoriaz piste map shows. The Grandes Combes ski lift, near to Avoriaz town, gives access to multiple red and black runs, all of which cut down the Les Hauts Forts mountain. Heading to Morzine and beyond opens a whole new area of expert pistes.

In summary, Avoriaz earns its name as an excellent and dramatic ski resort, nestled high up in the Alps and close to Mont Blanc. The nearby airport of Geneva adds to the convenience of this very accessible ski resort.
