Åre ski resort in Sweden is one of the largest resorts to be found in Northern Europe and certainly the largest in Sweden. The latitude ensures good snow throughout the season despite being low. For a Swedish resort there is a good ski altitude range here and Åre offers a real variety of slopes for all skier abilities to explore.
The resort of Åre is the largest in the area and is also directly connected via the lift system to the resort of Björnen. The slopes closer to Are regularly host Downhill world cup events so although the pistes are not massive in length, there are certainly some pistes to keep more experienced skiers challenged.
The scenery around Åre is very different to the jagged peaks of the alps. The mountain terrain is softer and rounder, however, this doesn’t take anything away from the beauty of the area. Åre overlooks a picturesque frozen mountain lake which is also a focus for winter activities and creates a perfect setting for the resort.
The mountain resort is very well equipped for both skiers and non-skiers with lots of ice and mountain related activities. Accommodation in Åre is available for a variety of budgets, this really is an interesting place to have a vacation.
Restaurants also cater to all budgets from Burgers in the main square through to fine dining in one of Are's exclusive Swedish restaurants. Are also has some great street food and there is a really friendly vibe to the this rather chic and stylish resort despite the freezing temperatures.
Cross country skiing in Sweden and especially Åre is very much, part of the scene and for those who have not tried it, this should definitely be something you experience here as there are plenty of trails, which like the downhill skiing, will suit all abilities.
Snow conditions tend to be good throughout the long season due to the resorts northerly location. Its always best to come prepared for very cold weather to ensure you enjoy the skiing here. The nights do start early at this latitude, but the resort caters for this very well with floodlit pistes for night skiers which is a really great experience.
In addition to skiing the pistes around Åre and Björnen approximately 5km there are the hamlets of Duved and Tegefjäll which are linked by a shuttle bus and provide an alternative ski region to enjoy.
Travelling to Are and Björnen is relatively easy as there is the international airport of Östersund Is only 1.5 hours away and this served by a variety of airlines including low cost carriers.
