Alagna Valsesia ski resort is well known for its unusual high drops in altitude making for excellent, although certainly challenging, off piste skiing along with heliskiing too. Alpine guides often accompany visitors on some off piste trials and this is certainly recommended. The off piste skiing is best in the La Balma section of the resort, with a stunning and exciting descent into the beautiful valley which leads to the Sesia river. If the conditions are right – the more creative off piste skier can cut back down through the Little Woods of Alagna. Finally, the The Olen Refuges off piste route offers some extensive and sweeping views of the surrounding area, but this is certainly a challenging route. Despite all the off piste runs, lower down the mountain is a selection of beginner runs that are often quiet due to the temptation of stunning off piste skiing drawing most further up the mountain. However, it is worth venturing to the Punta Indren Glacier and exploring this area for yourself.
In terms of charm, this villages around are mostly 12th century, and this translate in to a very rustic and retro skiing experience. The old walls and churches around some of the ski runs are certainly unique. Despite this, a very up to date cable car runs in the centre of the village which is great for accessibility and convenience. The wide, powdery runs up the mountain make it perfect for snow boarders to indulge and although there are no official terrain parks, the extensive off piste more than makes up for this. In terms of accommodation, the Alagna Experience Resort is a top pick with its very welcoming spa centre as a highlight.
