Aillons Margeriaz 1400 ski resort is a small resort located in the stunning Regional Natural Park of the Massif des Bauges. Surprisingly, given its size, the resort tailors to both beginner skiers (with a magic carpet to help younger learners get up to speed) and to the more adventurous skier (night skiing, nordic skiing and some challenging off piste skiing). The resort has been likened to a ‘small US resort’ perhaps due to its combination of under-the-trees skiing and exposed skiing found higher up the mountain. In fact, the ski resort is located in a large bowl which means that most runs all eventually end up at the same point – the 1400 metre mark included in the resort name.
A snow park is available here and Aillons Margeriaz also offers a boardercross, so there is plenty to explore even without the tricky off piste runs that can be found across the resort. The resort even offers Dog sledding, snowshoeing and if the weather is correct, paragliding. As mentioned, there is night skiing available a few times per week on two slopes; ‘Croës’ and ‘Chevreuil’.
Accommodation is limited here unfortunately, although this has its benefits – the slopes are generally quiet and sometimes empty. In terms of the scenery, the summit of Mont Margériaz is worth the lift up, as it offers great views over the beautiful Bauges mountain range. Skiing amongst the trees further down the mountain feels secluded and charming, although sometimes these runs can be busy if ski schools are operating during peak hours. However, even walks around this area are a great way to explore, with a variety of hiking and walking trails scattered around the resort.
