Tuscany, Italy
Located in the Apennine Mountains, Abetone ski resort is one of few resorts in Europe to be perfectly divided up in terms of its Expert, intermediate and beginner runs. Whilst it is a small resort that is now almost 100 years old, Abetone ski area has great modern snow making facilities to cover 80% of its runs, so snow conditions here are reasonably reliable despite being close to the sea.
The resort is a great way to experience the natural beauty of the Appenine Mountains. The top of the resort gives sweeping views over Tuscany. Pine trees cover the ski area and the varied ski runs cut through these Pines as you head down the mountain.
The new Abetone terrain park offers great snowboarding half pipes and for the more adventurous skier, there are large jumps available here too. The resort also manages to retain a Tuscan character, with a range of pizzerias and historic sights in and around the resort.
That said, apres skiing is available here and during busy periods the resort can really come to life. This is usually around the weekends, however, so be prepared for busy slopes if you visit around this time. Families visiting would be better suited to the weekdays, especially if you have small children starting to learn. Ski lessons here are good and in terms of accommodation, the Hotel Bellavista is recommended. It is a rustic, yet comfortable hotel located within excellent proximity of the ski lifts.
Above all, the Tuscan atmosphere is the reason to visit Abetone, it is charming, characterful and very accessible.
